Javier Cercas

Javier Cercas was born in Extremadura in 1962. He studied Spanish Philology in Barcelona and taught for two years at the University of Illinois, where he wrote his first novel The Tenant and the Motive (1989).

Today he is a professor of Literature in Girona and works as a journalist and freelancer for the Catalan edition of the newspaper El País. His third novel Soldiers of Salamis was an international success. His essayistic novel The Anatomy of a Moment is a representation of the failed coup on 23 February 1981 that has been widely acclaimed. Cercas was awarded the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize (2004), La Medalla de Extremadura (2005) and the Premio Nacional for The Anatomy of a Moment (2010).
